Hello. I’ll start by talking
about this photo. I was told to
put a “professional” photo of myself on this, the opening page of my writing
website. One that would convey
intelligence and a serious demeanor to those who might judge a book by its
cover. I have some photos like
that but I don’t like any of them.
One can be found on the back cover of my children’s stories.
I have my finger massaging my temple, as if pointing to a light bulb
turning on inside my head. I
like this photo because it looks as if nothing is going on at all inside my
head. It was taken after a good
night’s rest while standing under the famous
I am smart, so my wife says.
Intelligence abounds from one ear to the next, she says.
I do believe her but I’m smart enough to know not to take this
intelligence too seriously and therein lies my demeanor.
I like this picture too because my face is thin compared to its proportions
now. It was taken about five
years ago so there is less grey in the beard.
I still have my flight sunglasses, which completes the self portrait
of a guy who has spent his entire adult life abstaining from any manner of
professionalism. I have, for
the most part, done life my way.
Now don't get this wrong, there are and have been consequences, both
good and bad, for rebelling against the social machine, for listening to the
beat of my own heart rather then to the hum of cultural expectation.
I have become grateful for both sides of my convictions, particularly
the bad because it has been those consequences that have transformed me into
the man my family loves today.
I must say that I do feel pretty good about all of it, my life that is.
It must also be said that I judge no one in how they live their life,
so long as certain proprieties are met.
I love to write. I have two
children’s stories, The Boat Under the Boat,
and The Other Side of the Window, released
by my publishing company, as second revised editions and a novel,
The Hassayampa King. The
children’s stories are timely in their offerings of imagination and the
golden rule. The novel is a modern
yet mythical tale about the search for truth. Its words have taught me much
about myself, as it will for you as well.
