This story takes Donny on a fun-filled journey fueled by his imagination.  From the darkened bedroom and his video game, to the light and wonder of the outdoors, the story fills the minds of our young readers and listeners with possibilities found only by exercising their wonderful imaginations.

Do you remember our tree forts and secret passage ways?  What about tag and Hide and Seek, and the call Ally, Ally, Oxen Free?  What about exercise and social skills, familiarity with afternoon shadows growing long and learning first hand right from wrong?  What about toughening up, taking our lumps and playing through the pain?  Our children have lost so many of life’s great lessons because they sit and play with other people’s imaginations, in a dark room, staring at a video screen.

We were lucky.  Like most of the members of our generation, we spent our childhoods outdoors, in the elements, pushing the limits of our imaginations and physiological experiences.  Our children are not so lucky.  While moderation in anything is the “go-to” chord for all of life, it is not the norm for our children’s video game culture.  Yes they may have increased hand-eye coordination, yes there may be certain problem-solving skills enhanced by the unending exercise of sitting on their duffers pushing buttons.

The Other Side of the Window is about spending time away from the video game culture.  I thought this story necessary as an antidote to the infectious video game culture and found the perfect artist to portray these sentiments.  Jayne Azzarello’s detailed drawings capture the story’s steps from dark into light.  She is a gifted illustrator and can be reached at; www.jayneazzarello.com
