It’s a story that began with my son’s observation of a boat docked on the
side of a man-made lake in
We sat together at the edge of this lake.
He was six. I was old.
I watched his eyes. They
moved with the small waves and the rocking of the boat.
They would travel from the boat upright on top of the water back to
the boat upside down in the water.
They would spark with interest when something new was revealed to
him. I was fascinated by the
moments unfolding in my son’s mind.
We talked at length about the reflection.
He has always delved deep in our discussions, beyond his years, and
continues to do so to this day.
The discussion ended for him that day with a thought or two about his own
reflection in the mirror. It
ended for me with a thought or two about my reflection in my son’s eyes.
The next day a short five paragraph afterthought was penned by yours truly
about my son’s observation of the boat under the boat.
It is quite a different story today.
But as old as time as well. The
Golden Rule has found a different home in The Boat Under the Boat.
Perspective is everything.
I think your child will enjoy the same revelations my son enjoyed on
that breezy Sunday afternoon with his dad.
The Laurie Manzano illustrations capture the essence of the story in her
simple interpretations of Donny and his dad discovering the Golden Rule
